Mudlarks is a Hertford-based charity supporting adults with complex learning disabilities and mental health issues.
Our grant of £70,000 over three years contributes to the salary costs of a Café Mentor, who supports and trains people with learning disabilities who are employed at Mudlarks’ café.
Louise, Café Mentor at Mudlarks, said:
“We give the people we support all sorts of skills including hygiene and customer service, and work with them to really build their confidence in this environment. Hopefully, these skills will mean that in the future they can go off and do exciting things in other workplaces.”
Mudlarks have also benefited from the Foundation’s Enhance support, taking part in Ella Forums which support charity leaders to develop their skills and expertise with other local like-minded charity Chief Executives.
Vic, Managing Director of Mudlarks, said:
“Lloyds Bank Foundation have set up a great way for us to meet up with other charities based in the East of England that are supported by the Foundation. The fact that Lloyds do that shows a real commitment to the communities that they’re supporting.”
Service users had only good things to say about the support and experience they have received from the charity:
“Yeah, it’s changed me a lot actually. I’m thinking wise now. I’ll tell you this – it’s unbelievable here, I love coming here, it’s a really really good place.
“I’ve learnt to have a lot more confidence in myself. I just generally enjoy it really. I love coming to work every day.”

We have adopted Mencap’s definition of learning disability:
“A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example, household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.”
People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with other people.
