Grow is a closed pilot programme launched in December 2016 designed to strengthen and grow small local charities and community organisations in Redcar & Cleveland and Neath Port Talbot.
What is Grow?
Through Grow we collaboratied with small local charities and community organisations in Redcar & Cleveland and Neath Port Talbot and worked in partnership with the local voluntary sector to offer free packages of support to help selected organisation strengthen and grow.
Each organisation involved in the pilot was offered a bespoke package of support including consultancy, training and/or advice that responds to the specific and individual needs or challenges they face. Examples of support offered through Grow included:
- Governance support including help to become a constituted charity
- Support to develop new service models or interventions that respond to local needs
- Guidance to develop community or organisation assets
This closed pilot programme was launched in December 2016 and wrapped up in June 2018. Through the programme we helped organisations to develop their support and services for local people, with a view to helping them become eligible to apply for our grants so we can continue supporting them in the long term.
We are committed to supporting charities tackling disadvantage in local communities across England and Wales and promoting practical approaches to lasting change. Whilst we fund small and medium-sized charities with an income between £25k and £1m who are tackling disadvantage, we know there are many charities and community organisations having a positive impact in their local community who survive on an income less than this who are currently ineligible to apply for our grant programmes.
Whilst disadvantage exists in every community we are testing this new way of working in Redcar & Cleveland and Neath Port Talbot, two areas that have a strong and committed voluntary and community sector who are working hard to address the social and economic effects of a declining steel industry.
